The Menopause Market

Approximately 50 million women in the United States alone, experience hot flashes. Eighty-five percent of the women in the United States experience hot flashes of some kind as they approach menopause and for the first year or two after their periods stop. Between 20 and 50% of women continue to have them for many more years. As time goes on, the intensity decreases.

When Faye Cone started researching her book "Making Sense of Menopause" she found a statistic that is making many marketers quiver with anticipation: 40 million baby boomers will hit menopause in the next 10 years.

From big pharmaceutical companies selling hormone replacement therapy to lone entrepreneurs developing an electric cooling blanket, advertisers are looking to profit from what Ms. Cone, a former advertising and direct-marketing executive, calls the "mega-consumer" generation.

Fred Danzig, editor of Advertising Age, said these women were eager to see what the marketplace has. "When women of a certain age get together, its Topic A," he said. "The demographics are there; the numbers are there. So presto -- there's a market. There are products to be fashioned and sales appeals to be made.
